Barren Realms Elite, and the game it became

Barren Realms Elite (BRE) is a multiplayer strategy door game from the early 1990s BBS era, and Barrenfold is its spiritual successor, rebuilt for the browser. If you ran a realm in BRE thirty years ago, this page is for you. If you never did, it explains where our game comes from.

What was Barren Realms Elite?

BRE was a door game: a program a dial-up bulletin board system would drop you into when you called. You ruled a realm. You grew food, collected taxes, raised armies, and spent a small budget of turns each day deciding what to do with them. Then you hung up, and your rivals called in after you.

Its sharpest idea was inter-BBS play: whole boards fought other boards, so your realm stood beside your neighbors' realms against towns you had never dialed. A game session took minutes. A war took weeks. The drama happened in your head between calls.

Why do people still talk about it?

• Daily turns were fair. Nobody could grind past you. The player with more free time had no edge over the player with a job.
• Scarcity made decisions matter. With a handful of turns a day, every one was a real choice.
• It was social war. Alliances, betrayals, and message-base trash talk carried the game.

What Barrenfold changes

Time flows instead of ticking once a night. Your fields grow and your Folk eat by the hour, and the world catches up the moment you or anyone else touches it. Espionage is scoped: a Whisper is the one deniable act, and everything else happens where the whole Fold can see. Oaths are sworn and broken in public, and the record is forever. And when seats sit empty, Shades take them: scripted stand-ins that play by the same rules and are always marked as machines.

Where can you still play the original?
