How AI is used in Barrenfold

We would rather tell you plainly than have you wonder.

The short version

  • Barrenfold is built by one person. AI helped write the code, the words, and the first artwork, always under human direction.
  • One feature uses AI while you play: the Advisor. It is clearly labeled, it only gives advice, and it cannot act or change the game.
  • Game outcomes are never decided by AI. The rules are fixed server code, published in the Almanac for anyone to read.
  • If the game earns a real audience, we intend to hire human artists and writers to rework the public artwork and copy.

Who makes this game

Barrenfold is a solo project. One person designs it, runs it, and answers for it. AI works as a second pair of hands: it drafts code, suggests wording, and generates art from written direction. Every mechanic, every number, and everything that ships is chosen and reviewed by a human. AI made it possible for one person to build this at all. It does not run the show.

The rules are code, not AI

When you raid a rival, trade Grain, or loose a Whisper, no AI weighs in. The outcome comes from fixed server rules and honest dice, the same for every player, and the numbers behind them are published in the Almanac. The Shades that fill empty seats are labeled as Shades and follow simple written scripts. They are not AI, and nothing in Barrenfold pretends to be a human player.

The one live AI: the Advisor

The Advisor is a character who reads your Steading's numbers and offers a short word of counsel. Its lines are written by AI at the moment you ask. It is the only place in the game where AI generates content while you play. It is always labeled as the Advisor, it can only speak, and it cannot take actions, change your holdings, or see anything you cannot see yourself. The service it runs on does not use these requests to train AI models. If you ignore the Advisor entirely, the game plays exactly the same.

The artwork and the words

The artwork you see today was generated by image models from a hand-written prompt pack, then curated by a human: many images were rejected, redone, or repaired before any of them shipped. The site's copy was drafted the same way, with AI proposing and a human deciding. We think of all of it as a first pass, good enough to open the gates.

Here is the honest intent: if Barrenfold proves playable and people enjoy it, the plan is to commission human artists and human writers to rework the public artwork and copy. We would rather pay people for craft than settle for good enough. This page will say so when that happens.

What you will never find here

  • AI posing as people. No AI chat partners, no fake players, no invented testimonials.
  • AI deciding outcomes, rankings, or punishments. Rules and dice only.
  • Endless AI-generated content churned out to hold your attention. The game is finite by design: seasons end.
  • Your play being sold or used to train AI models.

Our promise

We label live AI where it speaks. We keep this page current when how we use AI changes. And as the game grows, we replace AI's first pass with human craft. If something here seems off or unclear, we want to know.
